James Short
James Short is Assistant Organist & Director of Music at Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, a post he has held since 2022. Hailing from Kent, he began his musical training as a chorister in his local parish church. After winning an organ scholarship to the University of Oxford, he read Music at Exeter College and conducted the acclaimed Chapel Choir. James led the choir on tour to Estonia and Croatia and directed performances of the Duruflé and Brahms Requiems in 2019. Upon graduating, James relocated to Florence where he was in charge of the music at the English Church. James has studied the organ with William Whitehead, David Newsholme (Canterbury Cathedral), and Thomas Ospital (St Eustache, Paris) to name a few, and in 2023 he was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists. James is passionate about bringing the organ to a wider audience; he shares insights into his unique job and explores lesser-known music through his TikTok @thecathedralorganist (please check it out!) He also manages the cathedrals organ outreach projects, teaching young students and curating an annual recital series. Besides music, James is a keen hillwalker and can be found in the Dublin mountains with his dog on his days off.
