Born in New Zealand, Thomas was Richard Prothero Organ Scholar at Wellington Cathedral of St Paul for a number of years before being granted the title of Honorary Sub-Organist. His teachers included Douglas Mews for organ and harpsichord repertoire, Michael Fulcher for organ and church music, and Judith Clark CNZM for piano.

Thomas is a student of David Higgs at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. He recently graduated with a master of music degree and performer's certificate, and he is currently pursuing his doctorate and artist's certificate from the Eastman School. He is currently associate director of music at Christ Episcopal Church in Pittsford, New York.

Thomas was winner of the 2017 St Albans International Organ Competition, the Third International Bach-Liszt Organ Competition in Erfurt/Weimar, Germany, and the Sydney International Organ Competition. He is active as a recitalist in Australasia, Europe, and North and South America.
