John Kitchen was educated at the universities of Glasgow and Cambridge. His first academic appointment was in 1976 as a lecturer and organist at the University of St Andrews. In 1988 he moved to the University of Edinburgh as a senior lecturer in the Reid School of Music. He retired in 2014 and is now an honorary fellow in the Reid School, He is university organist and is involved with the world-famous Russell Collection of early keyboard Instruments at St Cecilia's Hall in Edinburgh. He is also director of music at Old Saint Paul's Episcopal Church, and Edinburgh City Organist with duties at the Usher Hall. He gives many solo recitals both in the UK and further afield, and plays regularly with several ensembles covering a wide range of musical styles. In addition, he is much in demand as a continuo player, accompanist, lecturer, writer, adjudicator and reviewer. John Kitchen has recorded extensively for Priory and for the Edinburgh-based label Delphian Records.
